Lectionary Readings for July-October 2010


 July 25, 2010                      Proper 12
Hosea 1:2-10 – The prophet Hosea takes Gomer (a prostitute) to be his wife, exemplifying God’s enduring love for a transgressing people.
Psalm 85 – God’s forgiveness, deliverance, and justice are celebrated.
Colossians 2:6-19 – The new disciples in Christ at Colossae are urged to remain rooted in the word.
Luke 11:1-13 – Jesus teaches his disciples the Lord’s Prayer followed by two stories to encourage his followers to pray and to look at the gifts that God gives.

August 1, 2010                   Proper 13
Hosea 11:1-11 – A prophetic reading about the Lord as a tender and compassionate parent ruminating on the disobedience of the people.
Psalm 107:1-9, 43 – A psalm of thanksgiving to the Lord, who saves us from storms and other danger.
Colossians 3:1-11 – Paul urges the community to “put to death” old vices and begin a new life in Christ.
Luke 12:13-21 – The parable of rich fool.


August 8, 2010                   Proper 14
Isaiah 1:1, 10-20 – The people have a choice of obedience to God or death.
Psalm 50:1-8, 22-23 – A psalm that tells of the majestic and righteous God who requires true sacrifice and thanksgiving of God’s people.
Hebrews 11:1-3, 8-16 – Faith is described as holding fast to things hoped for and learning to trust in their reality.  Abraham is among those who had such a faith.
Luke 12:32-40 – Jesus teaches the disciples to trust entirely in the reign of God, their Creator, and to be ready for the coming of the Son of Man.


August 15, 2010                Proper 15
Isaiah 5:1-7 – Judgment on the vineyard/Israel.  This is the story of vintner who has a lavish garden but produces bitter grapes.
Psalm 80:1-2, 8-19 – A lament and a plea to the Lord, the shepherd of Israel, that the Lord will restore God’s ravaged vineyard.
Hebrews 11:29-12:2 – Jesus the promised one has opened access to God in ways previous generations longed to see.
Luke 12:49-56 – Jesus foresees difficult times ahead: his own ordeal and the necessity of division even within families.


August 22, 2010                Proper 16 Morning Prayer (Margie on vacation)
Jeremiah 1:4-10 – The story of the calling of Jeremiah to be a prophet of the Lord.
Psalm – 71: 1-6 – A prayer that God will continue to be our refuge and stronghold.
Hebrews 12:18-29 – The disciples are called to stand before Mount Zion of the heavenly Jerusalem; theirs is an unshakable kingdom.
Luke 13:10-17 – Jesus on the Sabbath day, heals a long-suffering woman from an infirmity she has had for many years.


August 29, 2010                Proper 17
Sirach 10:12-18 – The Lord pulls down the mighty and puts the humble in their place: a condemnation of human pride.
Psalm 81:1, 10-16 – A psalm of festival praise and an exhortation to worship the Lord alone.
Hebrews 13:1-8, 15-16 – Christians are urged to live moral, hospitable, and charitable lives, recalling the faith and examples of their leaders, but especially the unchanging Jesus.
Luke 14:1, 7-14 – Jesus tells a parable about humility and teaches his host that he should invite the poor and infirm to his feasts.


September 5, 2010          Proper 18
Jeremiah 18:1-11 – The prophet give us an allegory for God’s dealings with Jerusalem and Judah: it is like the hands of a potter working with clay.
Psalm 139:1-6, 13-18 – With marvelous wisdom god alone perceives the heights and depths of life.
Philemon 1-21 – The letter that Paul sent to Philemon asking that he take back the slave Onesimus, and forgive him.
Luke 14:25-33 – Jesus talks about the full cost of discipleship.


September 12, 2010        Proper 19
Jeremiah 4:11-12, 22-28 – The prophet’s oracle is for a devastating judgment.
Psalm 14 – A psalm of condemnation for the cynical and disbelieving who trample the poor; yet the Lord will prevail.
I Timothy 1:12-17 – Paul gives thanks to Jesus and praise to God for the salvation of sinners, among whom Paul has led the way.
Luke 15:1-10 – Jesus tells two parables: the finding the lost sheep and the lost coin.


September 19, 2010        Proper 20
Jeremiah 8:18-9:1 – The prophet laments both the heavy word that is his duty to carry to the people, and the stubborn resistance of the people to repentance.
Psalm 79:1-9 – A petition for the Lord’s help and deliverance after the destruction of the Temple.
I Timothy 2:1-7 – The disciples are called to pray for all leaders, so that Christians may live peaceful and moral lives.
Luke 16:1-13 – The parable of the dishonest steward.


September 26, 2010        Proper 21 Bishop’s visitation (Bishop Marble)
Jeremiah 32:1-3a, 6-15 – Confined in King Zedekiah’s palace, Jeremiah engages in a prophetic action.
Psalm – 91:1-6, 14-16 – A hymn of trust in our Lord.  God will guard and deliver the one who loves and seeks refuge with God.
I Timothy 6:6-19 – Paul exhorts Timothy to be strong with his virtues: fight the good fight.
Luke 16:19-31 – The parable Lazarus and the rich man.


October 3, 2010                Proper 22
Lamentations 1:1-16 – Part of a liturgical poem that recalls the fall of Jerusalem and the exile of her people to Babylon.
Psalm 137 – A psalm of lament in exile, with longing for Zion and a desire for vengeance.
II Timothy 1:1-14 – The opening letter of Paul to his friend and coworker Timothy, whom he keeps always in his prayers.
Luke 17:5-10 – Jesus tells of the disciples of faith’s great power, and reminds them that servants must not expect special privileges or thanks for merely doing their duty.
